I went to a poetry reading at a SGL men’s retreat, and this one brother started reading these micro poems that were sooooo good. He was a warm, kindred spirit, so it was interesting to see this warrior come to the fore and spit poems… dropping the mic after each one, only to have another mic descend from the heavens, so he could spit another…

Oh course I started to write about it, but I remixed it with another fascination of mine… the ballroom scene. About 3 years ago, my artistic tank was empty, and all I could do was watch these LGBTQ kids twist, prance, and fall on beat… their bodies morphing into unimaginable shapes, their dance a form of resistance, protesting a world that choose not to see them… so they saw themselves. It was the beginning of my renewal.

My literary concoction complete, now came time to record. But I couldn’t quite capture the humor at the essence of this piece, so I started playing around. Now I’m not the best at accents, but remembering my 4 years in Trinidad, with storytellers like Paul Keens Douglas, always brings a smile to my face. Hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording.

If we didn't run out a time, he'd a still been dey throwing down de poems on de table

Yuh was speaking de truth

I was gagging... no dis child ain’ come up here and talk ‘bout he slayin’…

but yuh know ah had to give yuh yuh props eh…
because as de children does say…
